Hints for Preplanning Your Move

Overwhelmed at the thought of moving? Where do you start? Who will help you? Moving is rated as one of the highest stressors in a person's life. It becomes even more complicated when there are health issues and when families are located out of town. For families located close by, the demands of work and life commitments make it difficult for a senior to ask for help for fear of being a burden to their family's busy life. There are feelings of guilt and a sense of loss, not knowing where to find help. Transitioning, change and downsizing into a condo, apt, children's home or retirement community can be a very difficult time in a senior's life. To leave the memories, comforts and familiar surroundings of a home, to which you may have spent most of your life in, can be very unsettling.

As we age we know our daily life becomes a little more challenging. What use to take us 10 minutes may now take us 20 minutes. You can help reduce your worry and stress by preplanning and getting help now. This is a great way to keep your independence. Do your homework first. Know where you want to live should your situation change suddenly, forcing you to move earlier then expected. Start by researching the retirement facilities. Ask questions and find out as much as possible.

Although you may not be ready to move, did you know that you can remain on a waiting list until you are ready? Start downsizing your home contents in small steps. Start with the basement. A cleaned out basement is one less thing to worry about. Set up boxes with family member names on them. Put items, such as photos, china or items you have received from that member over the years into the box. Now present the box to the family member as a personal gift. This is a great way of downsizing your home with a personal touch! Clean out one room at a time. Charities are a great source for recycling any unwanted items.

Remember a gentle transition takes time. Find out what furniture family members may be interested in. You can have your home contents appraised to ensure equity amongst the family. An appraisal can also be a valuable tool for both insurance and estate purposes. Having trouble getting started? Reduce your fears, and call a friend or get some outside professional help. A gentle transition is the best gift you can give yourself and your family.
